About the tour

The Juliana Trail is a breathtaking cycling route that weaves through the stunning landscapes of Slovenia’s Julian Alps, offering an unforgettable mix of nature, culture and true adventure. Spanning approximately 265 kilometers, this trail is perfect for both avid cyclists and those looking for a leisurely ride amidst breathtaking scenery.

The self-guided tour allows you to take as much time as you want for cycling and exploring Slovenia’s exquisite landscape. We will prepare the cycling itinerary, organise accommodation and transport of your luggage so you can focus on cycling and enjoying your well deserved cycling holidays.

Juliana Trail offers a mix of terrain, including paved paths, gravel roads, and forest trails. While some sections are challenging, there are easier alternatives for those wishing to conserve energy for the following days. Cyclists should be prepared for ascents and descents, particularly when navigating the mountain passes. In our itinerary the roads are mostly gravel, with some short sections of rocky parts. There are alternatives for the ones who want to choose challenging terrain.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Bovec – Tolmin

On the day of your arrival a member of our team will give you all the information about the tour, the area, itinerary and all the necessary information about the bike and equipment.

Right after you are ready to set off on a cycling adventure along the Soča River from Bovec to Tolmin. You’ll start your trail following the Soča River in Bovec, countinue all the way to Drežnica on gravel road and enjoy a descent through pastures back to Tolmin. On the way you can also visit the memorial Javorca – the Church of the Holy Spirit. This section of the Juliana Bike Trail is the most challenging, but for those looking to conserve energy for the days ahead, there’s a less demanding alternative available.

DAY 2:  Tolmin – Zakojca

On the second day you will start in Tolmin, go through beautiful town of Most na Soči and continue along the Soča and the Idrijca Rivers to Idrija pri Bači. You will follow some remote villages and narrow valley with incredible views all the way to Zakojca.

Uphill: 1060 m (3475 ft)
Downhill: 620 m (2035 ft)

DAY 3: Zakojca – Podbrdo

It is a mountain bike day. From Zakojca you will cycle to the Vrh Ravni Saddle through the Otavnik pasture until you reach Prehod Pass. Take a short walk to enjoy the panoramic views from Porezen. Then get ready for a long descent making your way down to Podbrdo in Baška grapa.

DAY 4: Podbrdo – Bohinjska Bistrica

You’ll start cycling in the narrow Baška grapa, reach the hills of Sorica, climbing up to Soriška planina. You’ll enjoy the journey through the forest across picturesque pastures as you make your way to the Bohinj Valley. Your day will end in Bohinjska Bistrica a charming village of Bohinj.

DAY 5: Bohinjska Bistrica – Goreljek

Starting in Bohinjska Bistrica, following the cycling route along Sava Bohinja River to Lake Bohinj. Before continuing your ascent to Pokljuka Plateau you can visit Alpine Dairy Farming Museum in Stara Fužina. From there youu will climp up to Goreljek, where you will spend the night.

Downhill: 320 m (1050 ft)

DAY 6: Goreljek – Kranjska Gora

You’ll wake up at Pokljuka Plateau where you will start your cycling towards Kranjska Gora. On the way you can stop at Alpine Museum in Mojstrana or at Peričnik waterfall. At the end of the day you will reach the picturesque Kranjska Gora.

Uphill: 793m (2600 ft)
Downhill: 1250 m (4100 ft)

DAY 7: Kranjska Gora – Bovec

Today you will go over the highest mountain pass in Slovenia – the Vršič Pass. While ascending this steep pass with 50 sharp turns make sure you enjoy the scenic mountain peaks that are surrounding you all the way. Ascending and descending the road made during the 1st world war you can also stop at Russian Chapel before reaching Bovec, your final destination.

  • We recommend bringing cycling gear (comfortable shoes for cycling, sportive clothing, wind jacket, cycling gloves, backpack, sunglasses) and a powerbank.
