About Premium Slovenia Wine Tour

Goriška Brda is often called the “Tuscany of Slovenia”—a region of rolling hills, medieval villages, and endless vineyards stretching across the western countryside. This full-day wine tour from Ljubljana is designed for travelers who want to experience Slovenia’s premier wine region in a relaxed, informative, and authentic way. With visits to two boutique family wineries, guided tastings, local cold cuts, and panoramic viewpoints, the tour highlights the very best of Goriška Brda.

Departing from Ljubljana, we drive toward the western edge of the country, where Alpine scenery gradually shifts into a warm Mediterranean landscape. Before entering the heart of Goriška Brda, we stop at one of its most iconic spots – the Gonjače Tower Viewpoint. From the top, a 360-degree view opens over vineyards, olive groves, cherry orchards, and charming villages such as Šmartno e Kojsko. This viewpoint perfectly illustrates why the region produces exceptional wines: a unique mix of Mediterranean warmth, Alpine coolness, and mineral-rich soils.

Our first winery visit begins with a warm welcome from the winemaker, an introduction to the vineyard, and an explanation of their winemaking philosophy. Most wineries in Brda are small, family-run estates passed down through generations, which creates a highly personal and authentic atmosphere. You’ll walk through the vineyards, learn about grape cultivation, and explore local varieties such as rebula, sivi pinot, merlot, and cabernet franc. The mild climate and fertile soil help produce fresh, elegant, and aromatic wines. The first guided tasting includes five premium wines paired with a platter of local cold cuts – usually prosciutto, cheese, olives, and homemade bread.

Afterward, a short scenic drive takes us deeper into the region. Your guide will share stories of Goriška Brda’s cultural background, once divided between Italy and Slovenia but today united by a shared winemaking heritage and peaceful rural atmosphere. Stone villages, medieval walls, and panoramic hillsides create a postcard-perfect landscape.

At the second winery, you’ll discover a different style of production. While the first estate may focus on tradition, the second often highlights modern or experimental techniques – such as macerated whites (orange wines), extended barrel ageing, or sparkling wine production. Here you’ll enjoy another five carefully selected wine samples, each introduced by the winemaker through stories of their cellar, family history, and approach to crafting unique wines.

Depending on timing and your preferences, we may also stop in Šmartno, one of Slovenia’s most picturesque medieval villages. Enclosed by defensive walls, Šmartno features narrow stone alleys, artisan shops, and quiet corners perfect for a short stroll or a relaxing coffee break.

We then make our way back to Ljubljana. Many guests choose to buy a bottle or two during the tastings – either as a souvenir or to enjoy later during their trip. For wine lovers and curious travelers alike, the tour offers not only delicious tastings but also an insightful introduction to the landscape, climate, and traditions that shape Slovenia’s finest wines.

This Premium Slovenia Wine Tour is ideal for couples, small groups, food and wine enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience the calm, sunny countryside of western Slovenia. Guided by an English-speaking local expert, the tour maintains a comfortable pace and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.

Whether you’re a dedicated wine enthusiast or simply curious about Slovenia’s wine culture, visiting Goriška Brda offers a memorable blend of outstanding wines, scenic views, and warm local hospitality – truly one of the highlights of any trip to Slovenia.
